5 Ways Not to Bake a Birthday Cake

1) Do not agree to bake a cake that requires a 12 inch cake pan or any other size cake pan that you do not personally own.

2) Do not drop a layer of the cake on the floor as you transfer it from the oven to the counter. Do not try to pick up said layer of cake from the floor when it is still piping hot.

3) Do not remove rock hard buttercream frosting from the refrigerator two hours before you are expected to leave the house and expect it to soften so that you can assemble, frost and decorate the cake in time.

4) Do not agree to decorate the cake with roses, flowers and hearts as requested by your child when you have never decorated a cake before in your life.

5) Do not think that you have to make everything from scratch yourself. There's nothing wrong with a cake form Costco or the local bakery.

Looking back, it was all pretty comical but boy, I was so mad when that cake landed on the floor! The best part was when my son said, "Yeah, Mommy's not baking anymore birthday cakes. Next time we have to ask Auntie Tracy to bake the cake." Ha! Smart boy.

I went through a 2 year span where I thought "I can do that'. Turns out while I can, it wasn't as pretty in real life as it was in my head. I found a bakery that I love and thats where we go :)

HAHAHAHAH this was such a cute and funny post.... and I think we have all kinda been in that position or a similar one as a mom. BUT regardless Cake looks perfect =).. You tried and can say you did it in the end that is all that matters.

Thanks! My son was happy with the cake which is what matters, right? Even though Mommy thinks that it looks like it has some spotted disease :-)

I completely agree - yes, I can bake but I don't necessarily *have* to do it all. I'm slowly starting to find the right balance and choosing my battles.

All of that...so very true!! I only make my girls' cakes about every few years. It really is easier to buy and it looks (and usually tastes) a whole lot better than the ones I come up with. I always get these brillant ideas in my head and then realize that I don't have the cake decorating talents to pull it off when it is just a little bit too late!
Your cake though...it looks incredibly yummy!!

Aww, thanks. The cake was HUGE and super heavy but it tasted delicious. I used to love baking cakes but it's been a while. Now I remember why it's been a while since I've baked a cake! Outsourcing next time for sure!
