Traveling Thoughts

Missing NYC

Happy Wednesday! Oy, it's been a rough two weeks as I've been traveling for work  - Chicago last week and LA this week. I don't typically travel for work so having to travel two weeks in a row has been brutal. I'm not sure what day it is or what time zone I'm in.

Here are a few bits and tidbits about business travel that have been running through my head lately.

1. The hardest part. I think that one of the hardest things for me, aside from being away from my family, is trying to stay healthy and active while I'm away. I think that it's largely because my schedule is out of my control and my days are often long and filled with catered meals.

2. Hunger! For some reason, when I'm on an airplane, I'm constantly hungry. Maybe it's the weird cabin pressure? So, I try to pack snacks from home both for the journey and for the trip itself since I know that there will be catered food, cookies and candy at the office or that I will be tempted to buy a bag of chips at the airport. The problem is that I have a hard time finding good snacks to bring with me. I would love to bring Kind Bars or Larabar or even packets of peanut butter to spread on apples but I can't. I have a severe peanut/tree nut allergy which eliminates most of these snacks.

3. Working out. For some reason I will get up and at 6am and work out when I'm away but cannot for the life of me get up at that hour when I am home.

4. Air conditioning. Why does every hotel and office building have to be freezing?? Regardless of what part of the country I am traveling to, I have to pack a number of sweaters or wraps to bundle up in since the air conditioning is often turned all the way up.

5. Green Smoothie Challenge. As you may know, I'm in the midst of a 30 day green smoothie challenge. I was really worried about keeping up with the challenge while I was away from home. I guess it's a good thing that I'm in LA this week. There are almost as many juice/smoothie bars as there are Starbucks. Phews.

6. Health issues. It never fails that when I am away from home, I get sick or something happens that requires medical attention. OK, maybe not every time that I travel but often enough that it's no longer a surprise. If you follow me on Twitter, you may have seen a tweet yesterday morning saying that I spent the morning in the ER. Yup - true story. On the way to the client site, my right eye started becoming incredibly irritated. By the time we arrived, my right eye was red and angry. I couldn't open it and couldn't see. Luckily, there was an ER close by. Apparently, I have some small speckled scratches on my cornea. 14 hours later, it's better but still very irritated. Great way to make an impression on a client, no?

Do you travel for work? How do you maintain a healthy balance when you are away from home? Do you have any peanut/tree nut-free snack suggestions??

INTERESTING about the getting up early when you travel.

I am always hungry on planes too! Nothing seems to satisfy me. I usually will bring my own snacks but it never cuts it. Is it the altitude and dry air?

I don't travel for work but I've certainly traveled and feel your pains. I agree with Miz - most of us have it the other way around, waking up to work out at home but not while traveling. Not so much for work but more for vacations - often involve a lot of walkiing, which is good to keep moving.
Snacks w/o nuts... hmm... Rreally, just fruit. Fresh fruit (apples, bananas) and dried fruit.
And trust me, better that the hotels all have cold AC rather than NOT. I've stayed in a hotel without AC in the summer and it. was. miserable.

Good luck finishing out your travels healthfully! Sounds like you've got it under control

Oh, how I wish this is the end of your ER run while you are traveling. You are very consistent and dedicated to fitness and nutrition. Inspiring!

Wow is the first word that comes to mind! Sorry to hear about the eye...I hope it feels better soon. Secondly, awesome job keeping up with workouts and the smoothie challenge! You should be proud of yourself!

Yikes... hope your eye is feeling better. I've been running in sunglasses to prevent things from flying in there, recomended by a fellow runner. I don't travle too much, so luckily I don't have to deal with it too much. Sending positive vibes for that eyeball... you need both of them.

And yes, I miss NYC as well. Sad.

SO with you on these travel woes/thoughts. As you know, I've been working so hard to stick to my healthy eating/workout ways when traveling -- and it's been a challenge, but an interesting one. The more often I'm forced into "un-routine" the more I learn about myself while traveling. PS. why on earth are hunger cues the loudest when in an airplane?? So frustrating! PPS SO glad your eye is ok!!

oh no! I didn't see your tweet re ER!! Hope you are ok! We def have the same travel thoughts and qualms, don't we?? Have you heard of Gotein? They are 110 cal protein powders that you just add to water and they might help you on your flights! (since you can't have nuts where PB and apple would be awesome!). I have ordered them online and M loves them, they are quick and portable and just require water, so that might be good for you?? Safe travels!!

Sorry to hear about your eye!

I always bring with me some food while I travel! I make a list of things I need before I leaving every time! Oatmeal, Protein, Veggies, Blender etc...

I hope your eye is feeling better. I actually have a scar on my eye from a bad scratch. I still don't know what caused it.

I didn't know you were allergic to peanuts. Wow! That does limit a lot of the prepackaged snack options for you.

Hope you are done with traveling for a while after this!

I always suck at keeping up a good routine while traveling. Struggling with it now. Good luck and I hope you feel better

Travel screws me all up. Just a weekend away will mess up weeks of hard work and detoxing.

Oh gosh! Christine! I hope your eye is feeling better! Anything related to the eye/vision is serious business in my book and freaks me out!!
I can't imagine being gone for 2 weeks - ugh! So funny that you mentioned being hungry on a plane - I always am too - regardless of when the last time I ate was / how long the flight is! LOL
