Preschool Graduate

I now am the mother of a Kindergartner. How in the world did that happen??

Jasper graduated from preschool last week. He and his classmates have been working very hard over the last month to prepare for their graduation ceremony. They made all the decorations - from body drawings for each student to tissue paper flowers that covered the railings to a quilt with their own personalized square. Jasper would come home from school and tell me about all the elaborate preparations. Then I was instructed to promptly forget what he told me because he wanted it to be a surprise.

He would wander around the house practicing the songs they were going to perform. He had the lyrics printed out on paper so that he could learn the words. While he might be a little pitchy, he poured his heart out as he practiced. In the end, they performed several songs including Lean on Me, That's What Friends are For, Three Little Birds, Itsy-Bitsy Spider, The Wise Old Man, and The Dinosaur Song. Quite a medley.

You could tell that he was really proud of himself and his friends. And rightly so. They've all come a long way and learned a lot. Plastered along the walls of the courtyard were posters proclaiming fun facts about each child and what they learned at school.

When asked what was one thing he liked to do at school and one thing he liked to do at home, Jasper answered "Sleep" for both questions. That's my boy. When asked why he is special, he answered, "Because I love my family."

I'm not sure that the kids realize the significance of this day and their graduation. Next year, they will be off to new schools in different parts of the neighborhood. To them, it was a big party and a chance to have cake before lunch. But, it was bittersweet for me as I remembered my goodbyes and transitions to new schools and places. Plus, I'm not sure if I'm ready for my boys to grow up.

Congrats! Proud Mama!

My preschooler just graduated a few weeks ago! All I can think of is: sniff, sniff. I love that your son got so excited to tell you things from school and then instructed you to forget them. That is *so* cute. What a great memory captured!

oh so cute!! I agree, I think it is usually more sentimental and monumental for parents and older siblings, even, than the child actually 'graduating' from preschool themselves!

Okay, first, your little guy is adorable!!!! Second...you mentioned to me before on my blog that you had a preschooler graduating, and I just want to say congrats to you on that. <3 It was so bittersweet seeing Hannah walk up onto the alter and sing songs to a theme called "Bye Bye Every Buggy". (Cue tears.) I watched her stand, shy as can be, singing softly to all those songs...and I fell in love with her all over again. That's what's so wonderful about being a mommy. It's not just one moment of falling in love...it's a million moments. It never ends, and it always gets better. I can't believe she's going to Kindergarten, either. Our youngest will be three next month, and she'll start her first year of preschool. Where did the time go? Time for another baby. Haha.

One day...they'll see this happen for their children, and they'll understand it themselves. <3

Awww, what a cutie he is. I've got one who's about to finish his first year of kindergarten and one with one more year of preschool to go. The thing that bugged me the most about graduating from preschool is just what you said about everyone going off in different directions to different schools. Hopefully your son will go to his new school with at least one preschool buddy. Mine had one, which made the transition a bit easier, but they make new friends so fast that I don't think it would have been a problem. Congrats to mommy too!

Oh, how sweet. I love that first picture the most!

My oldest graduated from elementary school a couple weeks ago - I still can't believe it!
