Friday Round-Up

This week was an odd week, no? With the 4th of July smack dab in the middle of the week? It felt like we had two Mondays instead of one and that's just not fair. In a roundabout way, we ended up at Flushing Meadows Corona Park on the 4th of July - site of the 1939/1940 and 1964/1965 New York World's Fair and current site of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, Citi Field (where the Mets play) and NY Hall of Science. While my son looks calm and peaceful sitting there on the ledge of the fountain in the picture above, it didn't take long before he and his younger brother took off into the fountain. Who could blame them. It was HOT out.

But it's the weekend (Hooray!) and I'm looking forward to a visit from my sister and my niece. I just hope that we all don't melt in the heat. Here are some of my favoriate posts from this week.

This piece from the New York Times made it's way around this week. I saw this posted a few times on Facebook and shared more than a few times on Twitter. It hit a chord with people - I know that it did with me - about the busyness in our lives and how we have collectively forced ourselves to lead such busy lives. It's definitely worth a read if you haven't already read it.

Jess over at Eat, Drink, Breathe, Sweat is training for her first marathon this fall and she's been having some moments of anxiety and doubt. Many of us have been in the same shoes and Jess' post reminded me of the excitement and trepidation of going after our goals.

I loved this post by Melissa at Live, Love & Run (who also is the genius behind The Weekly Chase). Melissa has an incredible story and is training for the Chicago Half Marathon. She recently came to the realization that she wanted to work towards becoming a run coach.

Charlotte was recently chosen as a new Oakley Ambassador and spent last weekend in Napa hanging out with some pretty cool folks. It's no secret that I'm a big fan of Oakley so it was fun to hear about their new products. Check out the video at the end of the post.

Lindsay at In Sweetness and in Health shares a killer total body workout. I can't wait to try this.

Did you streak? Runner's World encouraged folks to run at least a mile a day between Memorial Day and the 4th of July. For those of you who completed the streak, Pavement Runner designed a nice little ole badge for your blog. How did he get to design the official Runner's World badge? He asked.

Tell me, did I miss anything? What have you been loving this week? Plans for the weekend? Ideas for how we can entertain 3 kids ages 3-5?

I love this post!! I felt like I was a mouse on a wheel this week and couldn't get ahead of house chores and coaching things to have time to read all the blogs I wanted to!! Going to read a few that you listed that I had come across on twitter but didn't read =(

OMG. Stay inside tomorrow - latest forecast is showing 100+ degrees!! UGHHHH. Maybe a children's museum or something? Although I'm sure that 99% of parents will be thinking the same thing and it will be packed (I detest crowds). Have a wonderful visit with your sis and niece!! So fun!

Aww friend, you are the greatest! THANK you for the shout-out here and also for your kind and supportive words on my post the other day. It really REALLY helps having friends like you helping me get out of my own way over here! xo!

I hadn't read the Busy Chase yet but had heard people talk about it - thanks for sharing! Heading over to read now. I do agree that we do it to ourselves!

I have to read the busy trap. I am guilty of being " busy" all the time! Have a great weekend with your family!

Great list... and not just because you have that super cool pavey guy in there, because you put the spotlight on some fantastic bloggers and what they are accomplishing. Kudos all around.

Thank you so much for the love, Christine...I'm honored to be in a list with the others!!!

The Busy Trap was something I actually JUST read...and it's pretty straight up ON POINT. I feel terrible when I can't get to certain things...like emails to friends or tweets to friends...or to doing things with my kids, because honestly, right now, I really do bring the busyness on myself.

I love the photo you took...it's gorgeous and BIG. Your son looks so small sitting there!!! (And yet, if you're like me, you instantly think, God, he's getting so big!)

Thanks Michele! I too have felt like I'm a mouse trapped on its wheel. It would be great it things could.just.slow.down.

I have absolutely no desire to step outside tomorrow in the heat but I'm not sure it will be any better being stuck in the apartment with 3 kids running around like crazy! If not a children's museum then definitely some sort of water fun will be in store. It's so fun seeing my kids and their cousins play together. Love watching their bond grow as they are getting older.

Of course! Love your posts Jess because you are honest about your feeling and thoughts and not everyone does that. I figure if I can't run, it's my duty to cheer all of you on!!

Thank you! Hope you have a great weekend too. I'm totally guilty of the busyness factor too. I try not to but it's such a vicious cycle.

Of course! I loved that post. Regarding the picture, that was totally my thought - he looks so big!!
I wish that I wasn't so drawn to the Busyness trap and it's self-perpetuating for sure.

Christine,
I just read the Busy Trap article. My goodness did it resonate! I have printed it out so I can keep it and re-read it as necessary! I have been having some time off work and have been trying to do less and enjoy more. I have surfed a fair bit (yay!), and watched the ocean and dolphins alot. It really brings some clarity. Our son is on school holidays and I have been helping him to start skateboarding and practice his basketball hoops. We are cooking choc chip biscuits this week as well. These all sound trivial, but are just wonderful to me. Cheers, Bron

Hi Bron! It's a great article, no? I think that I need to print it out to remind myself from time to time. Or at least create some sort of reminder to not create so much busyness in my life. I love that you've been trying to do less and enjoy more - and surf!! All of your activities for the week, especially the chocolate chip biscuits, sound divine. It's quality time together - not trivial at all. Glad to hear that you are doing well!!

I go to bed so late after staring at the computer for hours that I usually just zonk out. Maybe a workout before bed? Always time to squeeze in a second workout, right? Ok, no. How about some meditation music, either on the stereo or through headphones. Wifey tried that and some really good sleep. Although at some point you'll have to remove the headphones. May want to get ones that are not too expensive and can just roll on.
